Star Anise, Illicium verum - two ounces of whole stars.
An evergreen plant endemic to West Asia, Illicium verum can reach over 10m in height and starts producing fruit only after six years. Despite not having any tie with aniseed, the plant’s peculiar eight-pointed star-shaped fruits are also packed with anethole and employed for similar purposes, such as seasoning food, brewing infusions, preparing liquors and mulled wine.
Star anise is a natural antibacterial agent, but it also helps detoxing the liver and it is especially recommended during breastfeeding. Just like the similar tasting aniseed, star anise delivers a carminative action, therefore it helps prevents and relieves intestinal gas.
