Actions: Cholagogue, hepatic, anti-emetic, bitter, laxative Indications : Barberry is one of the best remedies for correcting liver function and promoting the flow of bile. It is indicated when there is inflammation of the gallbladder or where there are gallstones. When jaundice occurs due to a congested liver, Barberry is also indicated. As a bitter tonic with mild laxative effects, it is used with weak or debilitated people to strengthen and cleanse the system. An interesting action is its ability to reduce an enlarged spleen. It acts against malaria. It improves appetite, digestion and assimilation. Indicated for `gouty' constitutions. Felter considered it much like Hydrastis (goldenseal) and said it could be employed for many of the uses of that scarce and high-priced drug. CAUTION: Avoid during pregnancy. Preparations & Dosage : Decoction: put l teaspoonful of the bark into a cup of cold water and bring to the boil. Leave for l0-l5 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day.
