Actions: cholagogue, cardio active, laxative, tonic, hepatic Indications: Chicory aids in digestion, stimulating bile secretions without irritating the liver, and therefore is excellent for use in constipation. It's uses are similar to dandelion root, including flushing the system of excess sodium and water retention. It has two heart benefits, it slows rapid heartbeat and has a mild heart-stimulating effect, similar to digitalis, but it is safe. It is a close relative of milk thistle, and has liver protective and liver rejuvenating properties. Some coffee substitutes contain chicory. Preparation and dosage: Tea: blend 1 teaspoonsful of the plain or roasted root into 1 cup boiling water. Simmer 10 minutes. Drink 3 x daily or as desired.
