Actions: Indications: Dong Quai, also called Chinese Angelica, or tang kwei, is known in China as a woman's herb, used for common problems women encounter, including hot flashes, low libido, irregular menstrual cycles, pms, and cramping during menstruation (dysmenorrhea.) Dong Quai has the ability to raise estrogen levels in the body, but it also can paradoxically lower excess estrogen through complex feedback mechanisms. Although the issue is controversial, hormonal tonic herbs that contain phytoestrogens have not been found to cause estrogen-dependant cysts and tumors to worsen. In fact, they seem to improve our body's own ability to improve hormone levels. Caution: not recommended for use during pregnancy.
